Student Council Info You Need to Know

Jessica Franklin

If someone were to ask you if you knew what Student Council was, what would your response be? Would it be something like, “I know all about Student Council, quiz me!” or an “uhm what are you even talking about?” If you are one of those people who doesn’t know what Student Council is or even does, and you want to know, stick around, and be captivated by hearing about one of the coolest things in the school atmosphere.

Student Council does just a little bit of everything. They create our theme weeks for Hoco, create cool signs promoting things such as any dance that may be going on, they play a huge role in fundraisers such as Harvest of Love, and so much more. One of the biggest things that the Student Council team does is advocating for the student body, and making sure that students are having a fun time during school with assemblies, and dances.

Sophomore Marynn Krull, a part of Student Council as a representative for the Sophomore class, gave me a little insight on why she enjoys taking part in Student Council. “I love being a part of Student Council because I’m able to give back to my school, and take part in a lot of things the school does.” The Student Council really gives back to the school, and it shows. They are more important than a lot would think. The thing we don’t realize is that without Student Council, we would not have most of the events and privileges we have today.

Now, you may be wondering how one can join Student Council. You can start the process somewhere between April-May.  It starts with a piece of paper and ends with a voting poll. You fill out the paper asking you several questions, and you also need 100 signatures in order to move on with the Student Council process. After you turn the paper in, you campaign! You can make crazy signs asking for people to vote for you, and why they should vote for you, you can hand things out like popsicles or ice cream, and anything school appropriate that persuades people to vote for you. People turn in their votes, and the new Student Council team is announced based on the number of votes someone got.

From creating super cool Hoco signs, to advocating for the students at Doherty High School, the Student Council team does just a little bit of everything! I don’t know about you, but what better way to give back to the school and be apart of something huge then joining the Student Council?
