DECA Teaches Important Skills

Ben Courtright, Staff Writer

DECA is a career student organization that prepares future leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, financing, hospitality, and management in high school. The club is run by the Business Education teachers, Mr. Bruce Cole and Mrs. Ashley Wiggins, and has about 100 students. There are classes that teach business, public speaking, and how to get a job. The club meets on the 2nd and the 4th of each month from 3-4 in room 204.

In this club the members get to do service projects and team bonding projects like painting a playground. When I interviewed one of the members Avery Whitesell, he said, “It’s kinda cool and a fun thing to do, and it helps with business skills, public speaking and getting a job. It is a lot of fun, but it is also a lot of work. It’s fun because we get to do a lot of things outside of class like the playground we painted.”

They have their state competition at the Broadmoor February 23-25, 2020 and they have their national competition in Nashville in March 2020. You can also earn your letter by earning enough points you can earn points by volunteering, going to state and much more. You must earn a total of 130 points.
