SP Cross Country Wrapup
Great season coming to an end, Cross Country.
From the first meet to the last, these kids hustled to improve themselves with every step. Cross Country is a 3.1 mile run called a 5k. The participants all start in a line, then a gun goes off. When that gun goes off, all of the runners sprint ahead to try and get a good start. The Doherty Cross Country athletes were always running to beat the clock. Cross-Country’s pre-season kickoff started in July. The actual season started in August, when they had their first practice preparing for their first meet. The coaches include Rob Duensing, Ryan Johnson, and Adam Truex. They raced in 12 meets this season. This does not sound like many, but this is an astonishing amount compared to last year when the season was truncated due to COVID-19.
The varsity team placed many times this season. Sabrina Wilson, a varsity runner, ran a 27:17 in her very first race, then later improved her personal record to 24:12, meaning she cut three minutes off of her time. Ben Courtright, senior varsity runner, says, “My favorite part of the season was getting to run with my friends.” Quinton Rodriquez, another varsity runner, ran a 21:29, then cut his time all the way down to 18:02. Senior Kendall Windsor had a goal her junior year to make it to state. Unfortunately, she was so close last year, but did not make it. However this year, her senior season, she made state. To qualify for state they only take the top 15 out of the 5a schools, Kendall came in 14th place. Kendall went to state on Saturday. She placed 76 out of 311 girls.
