Okay so I’m failing this class and I really need to listen so I don’t get a bad grade and my mom doesn’t take my phone and I don’t get grounded. Somebody just came in and they’re late but I just need to be focused. Wait, when did he start teaching again? Nevermind someone else is late. I’ll look at my friends’ notes. How did she get so much done? I can’t get grounded this week.
At Doherty High School this has turned into an everyday thought process to the new tardy policy. The tardy policy is if you are seconds outside the door, the teachers will slam the door in your face. Then you need to walk all the way to attendance even if your class is upstairs or the other side of the school. Freshman Peyton Margerum said, ”It’s hard to get to class on time because I go upstairs, then downstairs, then upstairs.” The policy is making things more difficult and making you even later. And when you finally do get to your class, you get all eyes piercing through you and a wonderful lecture from your teacher.
The tardy policy is a struggle for all students, not just the late ones. According to proto.io,“A typical student’s attention span is about 10 to 15 minutes long.” With our classes being one hundred minutes long, it can be extremely frustrating and difficult to concentrate. Students coming in and out of the room just for your teacher to stop and explain over and over again. It doesn’t help that the doors are locked after the bell rings, so none of the students can come in quietly. A mob of students agreed that the tardy policy has caused nothing but trouble.
The tardy policy hurts more than it helps and needs to changed because nobody likes it.
Pay attention so I don’t need to keep making summaries. You can start listening now so you don’t get behind.
The attendance office is all the way down the stairs, and if you are at the end of your hallway and that final bell rings. SLAM! You’re late and time for you to go get a pass. Freshman Brekken Cappilla said,” I get why they are doing it, but I don’t get how they are doing it.”, and, ”I feel like it’s a waste of time.” Another student sophomore Justice Moore said, ”It doesn’t make any sense because it will just make us later.”
Oh, I’m sorry. Is this annoying? Does it make it harder and more confusing to listen? Careful, you might miss something important.
However, there might be gray areas. Only if you’re talking to Mrs. Hienton or Mrs. Hart who both state that there is a gray area and the issues can be solved. On the other hand, the security guard Jake stated that there is no gray area like in the real world, if you’re late to work, you’re late.
There are many solutions to the tardy police to make it less disruptive, making students less late, and helping to avoid humiliating students. Many students suggest that there should be another place where kids could get a tardy pass. Others say that teachers should have them. With the many different ways to easily fix the tardy policy, maybe students won’t be so late to class and can pay more attention.
