Students change every school year. Like our hair, styles, what we like and don’t like. However, as we are constantly changing as individuals, our environment is changing with us. Here at Doherty High School, many things have changed, thanks to the new year. There are new policies, such as tardies and the controversial YONDR pouches. We also have a new principal this year, Mrs. Hienton, and new decor, including banners and equipment in the gym.
Students and staff have varying opinions and thoughts on the new things at Doherty and what could potentially be changed in the future.
James Blakely, one of Doherty’s security guards said, “I think there should be more security cameras around the school to make our job easier. The YONDR pouches themselves are ineffective; however, the policy itself helps students stay engaged within class.”
He said that he had only been working for Dohery for roughly four months, and started last February. The security guards have a system, where one would be standing at the front door while others walk around the school, checking in on classes they pass by.
Senior student Rian Brocious stated that she has noticed new gym equipment and that she has also noticed there to be more resources available to seniors for college. She also voiced that she hoped for there to be more engineering opportunities for students.
Another senior student, Kristin Craven, also hopes for there to be more student support and stated that she wanted the senior commons to be available to everyone.
As seniors begin to build up to graduation, the process can get more and more stressful, but, luckily the counselors and the principal have been able to make this transition easier as it can be. They have come up with a bunch of resources that are available.
Freshman Kensley Dibartolomeo stated that her first impression of Doherty was very busy. She said, “They should get rid of the phone pouches and let freshmen students off campus like most students throughout the grades at Doherty. She was less than thrilled to have her phone locked up and unable to access it throughout the day or even at lunch.
So, with a new year, there are new things to build up memories and history that many students will carry with them, and each year there are unique things that will be added and further influence the school for years to come.
