Halloween has many kids excited about the costumes and candy, but the most thing our high schoolers are excited about is the pumpkin carving! That’s the time for family and friends to hang out and have an enjoyable time. Halloween is when you can throw little parties and just go crazy with carving and laughing with one another.
The best part of that day is that we can spend the morning hanging out with friends and going shopping for little snacks or even talking about scary movies to watch. When it comes to night time we can all sit outside with candles and pick out faces to carve into our pumpkins. The way we get to take out the seeds and cook them, as they’re cooking we can start to carve our pumpkins while we wait for our seeds to get done cooking. There are so many things you can do with your pumpkins as you wait for your little snack to get done.
Some people like to turn their pumpkins into a part of their customs and those always look amazing. The way people carve scary faces on them and apply fake hair to make them look just as spooky as ever, the way that some people paint their pumpkins instead of carving, there is so much detail that people put into painting their pumpkins.
Today I went around Doherty High School to ask students if they liked to carve pumpkins and why they liked to do it. Some of the students’ answers amazed me and I noticed how much people value carving pumpkins with friends or family. That is some students’ way of getting time with their family and friends. Some students are so glad to be able to carve pumpkins cause there are times that they don’t get to hang out with their families except once in a while, I understand that feeling.
The first person I interviewed today was Kayleigh Gallagher, she informed me that she likes to sit and carve her pumpkin around her family and once they are all done they like to collect all the pumpkin seeds to cook them. That is always a good way to start a family night and have fun with one another with a tasty snack while everyone hangs out and maybe watches some shows. “I like carving pumpkins because we cook our seeds after we carve them.” Kayleigh showed her spirit for carving pumpkins and enjoying time with friends and family.

I have always enjoyed some time with my family, that is always fun to do. It gives families time to grow and learn more about one another. It also gives families more time to be able to visit, have a fun and relaxing time with one another, and maybe even meet some of their family members’ friends. That way they can all start to create a bond with one another instead of just letting it be awkward. There are so many people in Doherty High School who love to carve pumpkins and take time to hang out with friends and family.
When I interviewed Ashlynne Bucholz today she explained that she loves when she can sit down, laugh and have a good bonding time with her family while they carve their pumpkins to look spooky and make some look cute. “I think it’s just fun and a good bonding experience with my family” Ashlynee explained to me, carving pumpkins is always a good way to laugh and have a reason to sit everyone down and see what creativity pops up in their heads. “It’s always nice trying to carve something spooky on my pumpkin and try to scare my brother.” Ashlynne showed us that Halloween is more than just going out to get candy, it’s also about spending time with the ones you love.

Pumpkins are always a great way to get your Halloween spirit started. Yes, putting up decorations and setting up leaves in your front yard to jump into are fun but, going out to buy pumpkins for you and your friends and maybe even doing a challenge to see who looks spookier or maybe just see who has more designs. Those are always fun to do after all taking the time to carve a design into your pumpkins and sometimes the best part before their carving starts is taking out the guts to cook some seeds. Levi Ashby told me that her favorite part about pumpkins and Halloween is taking out the insides of the pumpkin. “I like sitting there and taking out the guts of the pumpkin because I like to take them and cook them as my snack”. The pumpkin seeds really are the best thing for people, I truly love how much spirit Doherty has.
Doherty students really do love to show their spirit when it comes to Halloween, so many students love going shopping for pumpkins, so people get them at the beginning of the month and some like to get them the week before Halloween is about to come up. I believe the best time to get a pumpkin is a week before that way they are not sitting outside the whole month getting rotten. I Love sitting with my family outside carving pumpkins watching the sun go down and having a little fire going on beside us. I feel like that is the best way to carve pumpkins, after we are done I also take the seeds and cook them up, The seeds always taste so good.
The last person I asked today was Annalise Rezarn. To me, I feel like she was the best one I interviewed today. She had so many great things to say and the way she could stop smiling was amazing. When I asked her what her favorite part of carving pumpkins was, she had to say “ I think it’s fun to hang out with my family and just show the creativity that I have.” She shows that you can show your family some of who you are just by carving pumpkins which is truly amazing. I never thought that carving pumpkins could be a way to show your creativity, I’m so glad that she could show me that just by saying her idea about carving pumpkins.
Annalise Rezarn 9th grade
So many people have so many great things to say about how they feel about carving pumpkins, there are some that do it just to hang out with family, and some do it just to challenge their friends. Most seem to do it for the seeds and I don’t blame them, the pumpkin seeds are such an amazing snack to have after carving pumpkins. Asking people about pumpkins made me realize that there are so many joys that come with this one holiday and that we shouldn’t just be worried about getting candy from someone and that we should cherish the time we have with friends and family. Halloween is truly such an important holiday to have in our lives because it brings so much to people more than I have ever noticed and I’m so glad that these students showed me that there is so much that it brings that I could have ever thought.
I would have never thought that Doherty had this much spirit just for carving pumpkins. Learning that Doherty takes the time to enjoy this holiday with their loved ones is just so amazing. There were so many smiles on people’s faces when I asked them why they liked to carve pumpkins. It made me smile just seeing them smile. These students all have one thing that brings them joy on Halloween and some are the same and some are different. Hearing their opinions was truly the best part of my day.
