Flag Football is a sport that not a lot of people are aware of and not a lot of schools have. Flag football is created for girls who want to play football, but it is a no-contact sport. Flag football was introduced as a new sport to many schools and initiated by Doherty High school in 2024, and looking at the record, Doherty had a spectacular season.
It was an overall fun experience for all the girls, and they all had so much fun getting to learn a sport they all have never played before. Learning all the plays and conditioning drills was a lot but fun to do with the girls. Even doing our cheer before games and getting each other all hyped up and mindsets ready is definitely what really made the season one of the best.
Junior LaLannie Donald who played on varsity as a running back, tight end, and free safety said, “I joined flag football because playing football especially as a girl sounded really interesting and was a new opportunity. I think we had a great season. It went a lot better than I thought, especially starting out and everyone being new to it, but I think it went really good overall.” LaLannie was number 17 and she had 14 points, 2 touchdowns, 166 receiving yards, 20 rushing yards, and 27 solo tackles.
Brooklyn Dorrance was the center, wide receiver, and defensive back on varsity. Dorrance said, “I’ve always wanted to play football, and I really wanted to have a team/good group of girls to be a part of my last year of high school.” Dorrance’s number was 8 and Brooklyn had 6 points, 1 touchdown, and 14 receiving yards by the end of the season.
Senior Bridget Duffy who played tight end, wide receiver, and defensive back. Duffy said, “[I joined] because I love trying new sports and I thought I would be good at it.” Bridget was number 23 had an outcome of 25 points, 4 touchdowns, 112 receiving yards, and 36 rushing yards.

Senior Madi Medlin-Wittenborn was our linebacker, running back, and punter. Madi said, “I decided to play flag football because most of the girls who were already trying to get me to come and try it. I am glad I did.” Madi was number 13 and she had 18 points, 3 touchdowns, 39 receiving yards, 111 rushing yards, and 78 solo tackles at the end of the season.
Senior Alyssa Ramos was wide receiver, running back, defensive back, and punt returner. Ramos said,” I decided to play flag football because I’ve always loved the sport and wanted to play when I was younger but wasn’t allowed to. Alyssa was number 18 and she had 140 points, 22 touchdowns, 282 receiving yards, 949 rushing yards, and 56 passing yards.
The outcome of the 2024 flag football season for Doherty High School was impressive: the first 2024 league champs of Colorado Springs for the first year of flag football. By the end of the season Doherty’s flag football team had 319 points, 22.8 points per game, 50 touchdowns, and 49 interceptions. This was an unforgettable and incredible season, and all the girls worked so hard and put their all into this season, showing how they deserved the title of league champs.
