At Doherty, the band program is often underappreciated, and even often seen as a nuisance. However, it is a driving force for the success of Sparta. The band fuels crowds at football games, drives the force of pep rallies, and stuns crowds at concerts. The band truly drives the school culture.
Think of the homecoming assembly earlier this year. Now think of it with nothing but pure silence. Not the same, right? The band unleashes the power of Sparta’s spirit, and creates the positivity and energy of games and pep rallies.
Ms. Civelli, assistant band director, said, “I think about football games and the spirit it brings to games. The support and energy we bring to [the games] brings spirit into the school.”
Now, some people do think that there are far too many people in the band. This is understandable, but there’s a very simple reason behind this– the community. Band students are incredibly devout in what they do, and because of that can inspire countless others into joining.
Titus Butler, a senior brass player in Wind Symphony, stated, “[I think there’s a large number of people in band because] it’s fun, and we have some of the best teachers in the building.”
This view is also shared with the directors. Ms. Civelli said, “I think band is a place where you have an instant community, there are so many people who find their friends here and create a home in our room. I think music is something that everyone can relate to, everyone has a favorite song, and everyone enjoys it. Learning to play it on an instrument is something that is incredible for everybody. Relationships made in band can last forever.”
This statement is undoubtedly true. Once you join a community like band, you can truly never leave. This community is so close-knit, that it’s nearly impossible to not feel welcome. Whether it’s a smaller group or an entire section, the We Before Me culture radiates throughout the program. It may be a slightly dysfunctional family, but it’s at least a family. They may not always get along, but they will always help each other and look out for each other no matter what.
That applies to all music groups. If one feels like they don’t belong, joining a music ensemble is an incredible way to build community. Individual groups may argue, (and maybe fight a bit too much) but they still truly care about each other. They even work with each other frequently, such as the Pit Orchestra for the musical and even just sharing spaces. Respecting each other is automatic for music students.
Joining band is one of the best decisions a student can make and one of the most long-term decisions. It can truly change one’s life and make them a better person overall. Plus, it’s just fun. And band always needs more people. (we actually have plenty, but still). Make a difference in Sparta’s community, and join the band program.
