A school schedule is one of the most important ways a school runs and stays afloat. A bad schedule can make it harder for students to pay attention and cause teachers to put in random work to fill in the extra time.
Most of the new Doherty students find this school’s schedule very confusing, and many people believe that it should be changed to 1-8 instead of a block schedule. There are many reasons for students to say this, and I and others have said that students don’t want to deal with this confusion, including the amount of schoolwork they have to deal with.
Many times, when there is a snow day or a day that is off, we have a day or two missing, creating confusion and putting some classes behind schedule. For example, on the snow days on November 7th, November 8th, and November 9th, we only had one full day, and it was 1-4, while other classes had to deal with delays in tests and work assigned.
Around Doherty High School some other students have a lot to say about our schedule. For example junior Isabella Martin said, “I like the classes the way they are because we get longer work time to get stuff done and extra help.” But sophomore Ethan Nelson says, “I’m not sitting down for an hour and 45 minutes per class, especially when we usually always have extra time.
Honestly, in my opinion, the schedule isn’t too horrible, but I dislike how long the classes are. I feel having four classes is less stressful than having eight. I also like that we get an extra day to do homework and that we don’t have to turn it in the next day. I just think it’s nice to have an extra day to do homework.
After looking at other types of schedules, I noticed that some online school schedules only have three classes, which I think is better and simpler. After asking what online was like, I was told that for homework, you get 10 assignments to do that are due by the end of the week per class (so 30 assignments per week), which I like a lot better and find easier.
To conclude this argument, I would like to state that most people who have to sit in a class for about two hours have been known to not pay attention in class and be more dissociative. Nearing the end of these two-hour classes, most kids don’t care and just want to leave, so I believe that we should find a way to change the schedule.
