The Doherty Spartans showed their school spirit by showing up to the theater’s play, “The Twilight Zone.” Doherty Spartans were showing how much they care about their classmates by showing up and cheering for every actor there was even the people backstage. They did so amazingly and their practice sure does show.
Doherty staff and students wanted to see how the actors experienced being in the play, acting out the movie, and making it like action for the Doherty students to come and see it for themselves. Doherty students got the chance to ask the actors about how they felt and their answers made me feel how it’d be to be a part of such an amazing play, and they told us about their practices to the point that they were finally on the stage and showing Doherty staff and students apart of a movie that so many people love.
Security guard Lonny Barret thought the actors worked hard at practices. “ I thought it was perfect. I enjoyed myself, and my favorite part was the first one because it was well acted and entertaining, but the best part was the delay and the kid fell down and then fell a little late. I think that the gunshot was the funny part. My favorite episode was the first one in the play. If they made another play about it I would go to it the second that it was coming out.”
Another teacher who went to the Twilight Zone play was English teacher Sara Martin. She said, “I thought the play was great. I loved it. I thought it was very well done. I loved that everything was black and white, and I was impressed watching my students act. My favorite part was the one where all the townspeople and when Spencer shot the person. I thought that the story was interesting, so I would go to the second part. My favorite episode was The Monsters are Due on Maple Street, I was helping with the administration, so I sat in the backstage left side and I could see just fine, I went on the second day of the play.”
Doherty students and staff have shown so much school spirit going to the Doherty play and showing their classmates and students that they are proud of the actors and how far they have come.
Alongside Barret and Martin, history teacher Greg Brittain also gave his input. He said, “I enjoyed it. I thought it was a good experience. It looks like they put a lot of time and effort into the play, and I liked the seat that I had. If they made another episode, it would depend on what time the play is. My favorite part was seeing students that I have or had up on the state, and my favorite episode was the child one was my favorite (Nightmare as a Child). They seemed very well rehearsed, and you could tell they took practicing seriously.
The actors and the people behind the scenes also got their input on the hard work they put out into the world. Although it wasn’t only the actors who played a big part in all of this, it was also the student directors. Everyone behind the scenes did such an amazing job putting this whole thing together.
Student director Jakobi Cockerham said, “I feel really good because this is the first time we’ve done a drama instead of a comedy and I got to direct it this year, so that’s fun.” He also told us,”My favorite part is having a lasting impact on the cast because I have to leave in a few months, so I feel like I’m leaving an impact on the cast. I think they did pretty well, I know with my episode specifically that they all loved everything that were doing so if they weren’t doing good they would tell me. I am incredibly proud of my work because my goal was to make theater enjoyable and it’s not just memorize these lines because theater is a way to express yourself.”
Not only did he tell us what a fun experience he had with the Twilight Zone but also Robert Taylor, Adaleeyah Latimer, and Grace Weaver tell us what they did as well.
Adaleeyah Latimer and Grace Weaver both directed Nightmare as a Child. Latimer said “Honestly it is I’m very happy that I got to be able to do this and this is the first time I got to be a director. My favorite part is when we forget to rehearse and we just start talking. I love the bonds that we make. I think that my cast and people are doing great, or the cast is small. Even tho our cast is small we can work through any problem we have. We have a good relationship.”
Weaver also said, “ I feel honored and excited about this experience. That’s all.
The cast and the people that I’ve gotten to work with like Zoey Houser, and I think they’re doing great and I am proud of them and I love them I’m proud of everyone in our area of work and experience.”
It was amazing being able to interview them both and get their perspectives on what they think they did and how their casts have been doing.
Last but not least Robert Taylor also shared how his casts did and what he thought his experience was like.
He said, “It’s been a lot of fun, it’s an incredible opportunity and can be stressful but it’s been incredibly fun, and getting to be in a mentor position for younger actors. The casts have been doing a great job, and have worked a lot and more. I’m very proud of everyone and my work”.
Robert Taylor, the director of “Monsters are Due on Maple Street” told us what he thought of the Twilight Zone and what the casts have been doing.
Cockerham isn’t the only one who has been incredibly proud of their work. who are we kidding, people have loved seeing The Twilight Zone.
We love our directors, we do, but staff and students think it is time we hear from our backstage actors from the one act.
A senior that participated in the play, acted in the episode “Shelter”. Francesca Galindo shares how it was doing the play. “I think it is a lot of fun I enjoy spending my time with something like this and seeing the result and seeing how amazing it is. I am just putting a lot of hard work into something is one of my favorite things and putting in the effort, I think even when we had our ups and downs at the end of the day it turned out great. And I joined theater my sophomore year because I moved schools and so I tried it out and I met a lot of cool people like my friends and met new people” And since the production of The Little Mermaid will come out in the spring will come to Doherty she also gave her input on it as well. “I think about it the only reason I wouldn’t is that I have work and because I want to be able I’ve got my future planned and set”.
Francesca Galindo and her sharing her experiences with us.
A few other students who were in the play also told us about how they enjoyed being in the Twilight Zone. Lael Roher, Chloe McCammon, Arya Miller, and Devlin Buxton told us about how they all enjoyed being on The Twilight Zone.
Lael Roher said that she was super excited to do this because we were the third school to ever get permission to perform episodes from The Twilight Zone. On the other hand, Chloe McCammon told us that as a main role in the play giving it my all even when I was tired was everything. While Arya Miller shared that this was a great experience learning but also this has been the best community. Devlin Buxton told us that there have been a lot of things that have been stressful but I’ve been able to pull through.
Staff asked Zoey how she felt about the play and what she had to say about it was amazing, “I thought that it was very good, I enjoyed the people that I got to work with. I loved being in the play. Yes, I would join the other play if we made a second one because this one was very good and I believe the other one will be better. I loved working with my cast mates, the scenes that I did were incredibly fun, and I made a lot more friends from this play.” She was even showing that it was good because while she was talking about it she was just smiling.
