It was a cool Saturday morning that invigorated the senses. The team jogged onto the field, their cleats sinking into the wet grass beneath them. The sharp blast of the referee’s whistle filled the air, marking the beginning of the season. For some, it was the thrill of their first game; for others, it was another opportunity to showcase their skills. But for everyone, it was about more than just victory—it was about setting the right tone.
Nate Bettencourt found himself near the sideline, adjusting his mouthguard. His heart raced as he took his first handoff, skillfully maneuvering through a gap to gain ten yards. The defender’s tackle was solid, but Nate sprang back up, energized and eager for what’s next.
“Winning the first game felt amazing,” Nate reflected after the match. “It was my debut, and starting while carrying the ball was just an incredible experience.”
Andrew Arguelles had been feeling the weight of expectations all week. It was no small feat for a freshman to start his first varsity game against a larger, more seasoned team. Early in the first half, Andrew sprinted down the sideline, weaving around defenders until he was brought down just short of the try line. His effort helped the team score on the next play, and he knew he had made an impact.
“Getting to start as a freshman was an awesome experience,” Andrew said later. “Even though we may be outnumbered, playing against bigger teams and coming out on top is just a fantastic feeling.”

On the first possession, he spotted an opponent barreling toward him. Without a second thought, Gavin delivered a powerful tackle, sending the other player crashing to the ground and igniting the team’s spirit. From that moment on, the defense thrived on Gavin’s intensity, managing to keep the opponent from scoring a single try.
“The first tackle really sets the tone,” Gavin shared afterward. “Our defense was incredible, not allowing any tries and forcing them to kick for points.”
Adrian had faced games like this before, but this one felt special. The chemistry on the field was undeniable. Every pass was precise, every tackle impactful. Late in the second half, Adrian orchestrated a breakaway, skillfully maneuvering through defenders before passing off to Nate for the final score that clinched the win. As the final whistle blew, Adrian scanned the field, taking in his teammates—all breathless but beaming.
“We played as one cohesive unit,” Adrian said as the team came together in a huddle. “Overall, defeating tough competition and dominating the game feels amazing.”
As the team gathered on the sideline, their coach gave them an approving nod. The scoreboard reflected a resounding victory, but the win meant so much more than just the numbers.
