Super Bowl 59 took place on Sunday, February 9th, 2025, in Caesars Superdome, New Orleans. The Philadelphia Eagles would face off against the two-time defending champions, Kansas City Chiefs. Stakes were high off the jump, air ringing with the history that would be made if Kansas came out on top. Philadelphia also was hungry for the win, given that in 2022 they were in the same situation.
Having had an amazing season and climbing to the 1st seed in NFC east, the Eagles headed to the Super Bowl to play against the Kansas City Chiefs who were the first seed in AFC west. Philadelphia came up short, losing by only three points, making the Kansas City Chiefs second-time Super Bowl champions.
Though Kansas was favored to win Super Bowl 59 and earn a never before three-peat, the Philadelphia Eagles were not going down without a fight. Early into the first quarter of the game, Philadelphia’s wide receiver, A.J. Brown made a huge catch from quarterback Jalen Brown that would have put the Eagles in a pretty good scoring position. Until a flag was thrown, and Brown would be called for a (controversial) offensive pass interference which gave Kansas the ball. Though they didn’t do much.
Philadelphia got the ball back and got to work quickly. Jalen Hurts hands the ball to running back Sayquan Barkley for a quick run, only gaining two yards. At 2nd & 8, Jalen Hurts passes short left to tight end Dallas Goedert for 20 yards. 3rd & 5, Hurts makes an incomplete short right pass to Dallas Goedert but Trent McDuffie, Kansas cornerback, would get flagged for unnecessary roughness. The Chiefs were penalized and Philadelphia gained 15 yards.
At 2nd & 11, wide receiver Jahan Dotson caught a deep right pass from Jalen Hurts for 28 yards into what everyone thought was a touchdown, but after being reviewed by officials who came to the conclusion that the runner broke the plane ruling. The NFL rule states that once a player has been contacted by an opponent and touches the ground with any part of their body that’s not their hand or feet, they are ruled down by contact and the play is dead. The Eagles were then set up at the one-yard line where to get the touchdown, they did their famous “Tush Push” basically pushing the quarterback into the endzone and it worked! Jalen Hurts gets the first touchdown of the game and kicker Jake Elliott completes the kick for the extra point. Eagles 7, Chiefs 0.
Well into the first quarter not a lot happens, until second quarter, the Chiefs start to somewhat respond. Bryan Cook grabbed an interception and gave Kansas the opportunity to even the playing field but to no avail. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes unable to find anyone, only gaining seven yards, Kansas is put into a bad position and decides to punt back to Philadelphia. The Eagles, also struggling to get looks, decide to go for the field goal. Rick Lovato Philadelphia’s long snapper was flagged for a false start, the Eagles are penalized and have to go back five yards. In spite of that, Jake Elliotts’ field goal is good, securing the Eagles three more points. Eagles 10, Chiefs 0.
The Chiefs are now in need of a touchdown, but the Eagles are not letting up. Defensive end Josh Sweat gets a sack and hits his “No Sweat” celebration, then immediately after Jalyx Hunt and Josh Sweat, running circles around the Chiefs offensive line, sacks Mahomes again. Then Patrick Mahomes, desperate to gain a sliver of yardage, passes short right to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins but gets intercepted by defensive back Cooper DeJean who ran 38 yards for the touchdown. Jake Elliotts extra point is good. Eagles 17, Chiefs 0.
With halftime in tow, the Eagles are on fire grabbing another interception and getting another touchdown putting them up 24 – 0 at halftime.
Second half of the game the Eagles score the first 3 points off of a field goal putting the score to 27 – 0 and then right after, wide receiver DeVonta Smith caught a pass for 46 yards and a touchdown. Jake Elliott completes the kick for the extra points, Philadelphia 34, Kansas 0.
The Chiefs are in a massive deficit but managed to get on the board at the near end of the 3rd thanks to a deep pass from Patrick Mahomes to Xavier Worthy for 6. Kansas goes for a two-point conversion attempt instead of a 1-point field goal, their attempt ultimately fails. Going into the fourth and final quarter of the game, the score of the game being 36 – 10
It was clear that the Kansas Chiefs fate was sealed, and the Philadelphia Eagles had successfully denied the back-to-back champions a three peat. The fourth quarter concluded 40 – 22, a huge upset for Kansas and a huge win for Philadelphia. In a post-game interview with Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes said in reference to being denied their third win at the Super Bowl, “Losing the Superbowl just doesn’t feel good anyway, I was proud how my team fought this season with the expectations we had on us, but we came up short and now it’s how you respond. Hopefully that we can learn from this like how we learned from the last loss we had and continue to get even better.”
Some words from Eagles head coach Nicholas Sirianni, his response to being Super Bowl Champions, “God blessed us very much and he gave us all the talents to be able to get here so first and foremost, thanks to him. This is the ultimate team game. You can’t be great without the greatness of others and a great performance by everybody. Offense, defense, special teams, our coaching staff, and these great players. We didn’t really ever care what anyone thought about how we won or their opinions. All we want to do is win.”
The Eagles pulled off a huge win, never letting up and doing what needed to be done. Everyone is looking forward to what the next season will bring but for now, the Philadelphia Eagles are your Super Bowl LIX Champions. Fly Eagles fly.
