Whether you like the loud bang of the drums or the complex characters of a musical or theater, everyone has a performing art that they like more than others. At Doherty there are many different performing arts options like, orchestra, choir, band, dance, theater and more. Both the viewers can enjoy the performing arts and the kids in the performing arts. With all the kids that do the performing arts, there are classes and clubs offered at Doherty High School.
One of the performing arts that is well loved by students who do that class is choir. Choir is a fun performing art where you get together with friends and sing songs. Choir Freshman Roslyn Gibson exclaimed, “I love choir, and it’s my favorite in the whole world!” Choir events are seen often in school. For example in an assembly a small group of choir kids will sing the Pledge of Allegiance. Choir has a lot of talent and many people have stated that they listen to the choir kids and that is why it’s their favorite performing art.
Another performing art that is very popular is dance. With dance class being offered at school many kids will do dance for the PE credit. The dance class is very fun and gives a lot of creative freedom while still remaining structured. Freshman dancer Dilecia Jakcson exclaimed,”Dance is so fun, it’s my favorite. I wish I had dance everyday.” Dance helps people make friends, get exercise, build confidence, and so much more. While dance is a fun and popular sport, there aren’t a lot of opportunities to watch the Doherty Spartans dance since there are not very many performances. Dilecia along with many others hope for more opportunities to perform dance. Dilecia Jackson stated,”I wish we had more dance events”.
Everybody can appreciate a good show or have a favorite actor on Broadway. Theater is a very popular art and is truly loved by many. Theater is a lot of fun and was put really high up on the list of what people’s favorite performing art is. A love for characters and drama, or maybe you like a comedy, or you just like to watch the show and hear a song or two in there. With theater everything is like controlled chaos which is very interesting to watch. Beloved theater teacher Jessica Vaillancourt said,”The kids are amazing and work incredibly hard.” Theater is an amazing performing art and helps to shape amazing people with that class. Theater has a big impact on the students’ lives at Doherty High School.
Everyone has at least one friend in the band. It is a very popular class. Most students that are in band now have been doing it since they were in elementary school. In technical terms, a band is a musical ensemble of student musicians, typically comprising woodwind, brass, and percussion instruments, that rehearses and performs instrumental music, but in reality it’s so much more. Its memories, friendships, and an overall good experience. Freshman Evan Tunney thinks that band is ¨such a good class. I look forward to it most. You get to be with some of your best friends while playing an instrument you love.¨ Band is one of the classes taken with such a big variety of students taking it. You can find any type of person in a band class, and that makes the experience so much more enjoyable.
Orchestra is a classic and very elegant performing art. It involves teamwork and incredible skills. Orchestra sounds are very soft and elegant, but can also have a dark twist. Orchestra deals around the string instruments. Freshman Scarlett Griego stated,”We get to work together and grow a lot.” This shows the amount of teamwork that is needed with an orchestra. However the orchestra is underrated which can make things complicated. Scarlett also explained that,”We definitely get less funding than the band making it more difficult.” With a few more performances I think that orchestra would be a lot less underrated.
Choir, dance, theater, band, and orchestra…The performing arts, but which is the BEST. It could be choir, listening to the beautiful harmonization of the singer. Or is it dance, expression through movement like ballet, hip hop, or even jazz. No it could be theater, the art of storytelling with song and dance, plus a good monologue. Honestly, there is no ¨BEST¨ performing art, they are all amazing. Filled with hardwork and talent, it takes a lot to be a performer, so shout out to Doherty High School´s performing arts.
