New York Photographer Brandon Stanton’s Human’s of New York series is the inspiration for Jenny George’s Doherty Photography II classes to start our own collection. Stanton started interviewing people and taking their photographs. These stories have been shared in various books as well as on his website. Part of his purpose was showing that everyone has a story. Stanton says, “My interviews are very pointed. I’m an active participant; I will kindly interrupt people. But I’ve learned there is nothing people won’t tell you if you ask in a compassionate and legitimately interested way.” The assignment for our students was to photograph anyone connected to Doherty High School, and to use their own words to tell their story. Stanton writes, “It seems that everywhere I go, people want the same things – security, education, family. It’s just that so many people have no avenues through which to obtain these things.” Everyone is struggling with something. But there’s also so much that connects us. We hope you enjoy this snapshot of the people we found in our community.
