⚠️SPOILERS⚠️
Have you ever read a book or watched a movie that ended on a big cliffhanger? Writers and directors like to keep the audience on their toes, so a lot of the time, the resolution to that cliffhanger is planned to release a whole year later, and it feels like torture to wait that long.
Well, Lauren Roberts, the author of the Powerless Trilogy, did just that.
The trilogy is set in the kingdom of Ilya, where society is divided by supernatural powers. It follows Paedyn Gray as she fights for her life in the Purging Trials. Along the way, she meets a prince and ultimately fights against the norms of society. It keeps you hooked from the very beginning.
The novella about Paedyn’s best friend came out in April of 2024, with Reckless following close behind in July. It answered a lot of questions from Powerless, but left readers with their jaws hanging open after the love interest’s brother (the king) proposes to Paedyn—let the love triangle unfold. The Powerless community has been going nuts since July, and after months and months of waiting, Roberts released the final book on April 8th, 2025.
The wait was endless, but after lots of hints from Roberts herself, Fearless is open to the public. Go at it, America.
The book picks up right where the previous one left off. Paedyn makes the decision to accept the king’s proposal, which throws the readers for a loop. As the plot progresses, Paedyn is thrown back into a series of Trials to prove that she is worthy to be queen. The book is centered around Paedyn battling her way through the Trials and fanning the flame of her threatened relationship with the king’s brother. The tension picks up even more in the third and final trial when she is forced to battle to the death with her greatest love. Roberts penned the scene with authentic emotion and riveting prose, leaving readers in tears. Once Paedyn has proven she is worthy of the title of Queen of Ilya, she prepares for her wedding to the king. Family secrets are revealed and the drama escalates. At the climax of the book, the new queen is swamped by tremendous devastation. The last chapter is set five years in advance, and readers learn how Queen Paedyn and her family prosper in their new reality. The epilogue features the king and how his story ends.
The book was very well written and tied up a lot of loose ends while also leaving some of Paedyn’s story to the readers’ imaginations. Roberts masterfully threw in plot twists at just the right spots to keep readers interested. The description in Fearless was on point and the dialogue had us kicking our feet.
This story was perfect in every way. Roberts created such an amazing world with amazing characters that no one will forget. She communicated the struggle between duty and love. Roberts has outdone herself again and we can’t wait to see what she writes next.
All in all, Roberts has created such and amazing series that will be remembered forever and ever. And to anyone who is thinking about reading her books, do it! You won’t regret it.
