The Minecraft movie was released on April 4th, 2025, to mixed reviews. Critics give it only a 49% on rotten tomatoes, but fans give it almost 87%.
The Minecraft movie had a budget of 150$ million dollars and has so far (as of 4/22/25) grossed 700 million dollars. Did the movie live up to the undying expectations of fans, or was it a disappointing movie to critics and fans alike?
Even at the very first moments of the movie, it’s obvious it takes itself seriously in no regard. The movie opens and a child version of Steve is seen outside of a mine shaft. An old man comes out of the cave, saying that there’s no kids allowed, and Steve needs to come back as an adult.
Steve becomes a doorknob salesman as he grows up, but he hates this job. Steve then comes back, ready to enter the cave. Once Steve enters the cave, he finds two artifacts that when connected, open a portal to a world that isn’t his own; The Minecraft world!
Steve obviously enters, and we get a short montage of all the blocks and things Steve discovers in his time in the world. Mostly getting shots of him building structures like basic dirt houses. Eventually he meets a dog he names Dennis.
But as predicted, this story has a villain!
The evil ruler of the nether Malgosha and her minions want the artifact that turns on the portal! If this falls into Malgosha’s hands, she would rule the entire “overworld” (the part of the Minecraft world that isn’t the nether).
Seeing as we were stating what happens in the story, it is very strange that the ender dragon and the end entirely were not only rejected as a plotline but isn’t even MENTIONED. Very weird considering the infamy of Minecraft’s final boss, but I digress.
It’s at this point that we meet our second character: Garette. Played by Jason Momoa, this character is my favorite in the entire movie.
From front to back the satirical take on gaming legends turned sour has been used before. Weve seen it in movies like pixels before, but Jason Momoa’s acting really steps it up.
Garette is a video gaming legend who was the best in the world at Hunk city Rampage, but now runs a failing retro video game shop.
We find out Garette likes to auction storage containers, and bids a high price for one hoping that the old video game console inside is intact.
However after winning the storage unit, he would open the box only to find it empty. On his way home from this devastation with box in hand, his car breaks down on the interstate.
It is in the middle of this scene that it cuts to our “main” character. Henry is introduced to us through dialogue with his sister, Natalie.
Henry and Natalies mom and dad are both somehow dead, leaving Natalie to take care of him. Moving into a new town, Henry is portrayed to be nervous and creative.
They put a large emphasis on him “being creative,” with him constantly sketching and doodling. We then see Garette on the side of the road breaking down as they go to their new house.
When they get to the house, they’re greeted by the landlord Dawn, who also runs a mobile petting zoo.
She gives them a brief welcome and then Henry and Natalie head inside. Henry makes himself at home and eventually we get to the next day. Henry is heading off to school, but before he does, Natalie gives him “pizza tots” to give away at school.
He reluctantly agrees and heads to school, tin foil covered tots in hand. He eventually comes across Garette’s store where he then enters. Garette sees him and in all his great wisdom, offers him classes to “not be a loser”
He then takes the tin foil off the tots, makes fun of Henry for it, and eats one.
Henry heads to school, where his teacher prompts him to draw a “still life” picture. Henry draws a banana with a jetpack and his teacher calls him a loser, saying it would never work.
Henry then somehow makes this jetpack, attaching it to a skeleton science class model. However right before he launches it, some bullies snip a cord with scissors!
Meanwhile, Natalie is working at her new job at a a potato chip factory called Chuglass potato chips.
But Henry loses control of his rocket, and it fly’s into the massive potato chip mascot and destroys it!
Not wanting to get in trouble and cost his sister her job, he calls Garette instead of Natalie when in the principal’s office.
Garette picks him up and they head to the store, where they find Steve’s magic cube. After a note convinces them, they put the two pieces together and open the portal!
They follow the cube to the cave, and after a few seconds Natalie and Dawn just show up. They then enter the Minecraft realm. We are now 20 minutes into the movie.
Its at this point when Malgosha realizes that the portal is open and starts planning her overworld takeover.
Steve has been in prison ever since his capture, as Malgosha captured him saying she wouldnt let him go until the portal opened, assuming it never would.
Steve is finally let free, and looking for Dennis.
Also at this moment a nimwit villager (a dumb villager who in game can’t be given a job) finds the portal and walks into it, teleporting to the real world.
The sun then sets for the first time, and we see our cast fight the mobs. In this process, the orb breaks. When it seems like they’re about to lose, Steve of course swoops in just in time and saves the day.
The team then heads to town after some introduction, and LOTS happens here.
First thing is that the Technoblade reference is dropped here. Technoblade was a Minecraft youtuber who was insanely famous even before his unfortunate death, having millions of subscribers. On June 30th of 2022, the world would be informed of Technoblades death due to cancer through a video titled “so long nerds” rest in peace Technoblade.
Shortly after this we are greeted with “Steves lava chicken”, a shop that steve set up to cook lava with chicken.
Everybody knows the song, everyone’s heard it. Its a pretty funny scene and Jack Black kills it as he normally does when given short song bits.
We then cut to Malgosha, and meet our new character: Chungus
Malgosha gives her army some nether wart so they dont burn on the surface, planning an attack on the village.
Steve, Garette and Henry explore Steves shack, messing around with various items and crafting some strange objects like a tater tot launcher and 2 buckets on a chain made to be like num-chuks.
The piglins then invade the village through a nether portal, and a large fight sequence ensues.
Steve and his whole crew then head to the woodland mansion to get the new piece of glass for the orb. Many antics ensue but nothing particularly important.
We do meet Malgoshas new minion however, who is a massive mutant piglin brute who nobody can fight 1 on 1.
Eventually they reach the woodland mansion. Garette and Steve distract the pillagers by playing their saxophone, while Henry goes and looks for the glass.
Eventually this plan no longer works however, and they are put into a wrestling ring. Then they bring in the infamous, Chicken Jockey.
Another line everyone knows, a chicken jockey is a baby zombie riding a chicken. Steve yells “CHICKEN JOCKEY” upon its arrival, creating a great meme in the process.
After a long fight, Garette and Steve win. Meanwhile, Henry has just found the orbs glass replacement! On his way out though, he encounters an enderman.
All that happens is he looks into its eyes and sees everyone from the movie just kind of calling him dumb.
We then leave the woodland mansion and get to the bridge. Malgoshas troops are there, ready to blow up the bridge.
Garette throws Henry at one of the ghast balloons, knocking off all the enemys and making a safe place to go. Steve sets down a slime block and jumps on.
Garette however, decides to not do so; for literally no reason. This moment gave me a great laugh, telling them to “tell his story in song. Keep it heavy, keep it metal, real instruments”
He then fights until the bridge explodes and Steve and Henry float off. Eventually Steve, Henry, and Dennis who was found by Dawn and Natalie during all of that, meet up inside their new mushroom house base.
The devise a plan to get rid of Malgosha for good, using the orbs power to evaporate her.
After a large fight scene for the orb, Henry put the orb in the monolith and Malgosha dies.
In the end, everyone celebrates, and villagers throw a large party for the hero’s. After saying goodbye, they all decide its better to go live in the real world. Even Dennis.
This movie was unreal. An unserious, hilarious hodge podge was almost exactly what i wanted from the Minecraft movie.
Although the plot has weak spots for sure, mainly the end not even being brought up; its most likely being saved for a sequel. The characters aren’t deep or anything, but they don’t need to be, its meant for laughs.
Every bit of this movie was hilarious and there’s many jokes, gags and a plotline with the nimwit villager that I didn’t even go into. If I covered every single thing funny in this movie it would never end.
A great experience and an ok movie that’s going to be a great and hilarious time with others. I give the Minecraft movie an 8.7/10.
