Student Life, Local Fun Summer Vibes
The last bell is about to ring, and students at Doherty High School are counting down the days until summer. The pressure of school, tests, and nonstop assignments will finally take a break, and it’s time to focus on something we’ve all earned: freedom.
But once you’ve slept in for a few days and caught up on your favorite shows, the question kicks in- what now?
Here’s your go-to list of the best ways to spend summer in Colorado Springs and beyond, made for Doherty students looking to make the most of every moment.
Chill Close to Home
You don’t need to drive across the state to have a good time. Some of the best summer hangouts are just minutes from school.
Start with Cottonwood Creek Park. Whether you’re playing pickup basketball, skating at the ramps, or just laying in the grass with music playing, it’s a solid spot to meet up and vibe. There’s even an open field for those wanting to run around or toss a football.
A little farther out, Palmer Park is an ideal summer favorite. You can hike the trails, climb rocks, or just sit on the cliff edge and watch the sunset. Bring snacks, friends, and your phone for the best golden-hour photos.
Explore Colorado Springs
If you’re down to go a bit further, there are plenty of places around the city that give major summer energy.
Garden of the Gods is always free and always stunning. You can hike the trails, take pictures, or just enjoy the view. No matter how many times you’ve been, it never really gets old.
Looking to cool off? Prospect Lake is great for swimming, kayaking, or just lounging at the beach. It’s also not far from Memorial Park, where you can skate, play volleyball, or chill near the water.
Into more active fun? Try Sky Zone for trampoline dodgeball or obstacle courses, or hit The Summit Interquest for bowling, laser tag, and arcade games. These spots are perfect for group hangs or random weekend fun or taking your partner out for some fun before kicking it back at the crib!
Go Local, Eat Good
Summer and food go hand in hand. Luckily, Colorado Springs has plenty of spots where students love to grab a bite.
If you’re craving something quick and cheap, Albertacos, Little Caesars, and Sonic are always go-tos. But for something a little different, check out Taco Star or Salsa Brava for next-level flavor.
Looking for a chill drink spot? Dutch Bros is the move. Whether it’s an energy drink, iced coffee, or smoothie. Even though, they don’t have any matcha for the matcha fellas, the vibes are always good, especially late at night with music blasting through the speakers.
Take a Mini Adventure
If you can get a ride or have your own car, some of the coolest summer memories are just a short drive away.
Manitou Springs is a must. You can walk through the old-school arcade, grab ice cream, or drink natural spring water (if you dare), and explore the quirky shops downtown. It’s fun, weird, and perfect for a day trip.
For those who want a little thrill, head to the Royal Gorge and walk across one of the highest suspension bridges in the world-or try the zipline if you’re feeling brave. It’s definitely a memory you won’t forget.
You can also take a drive up Pikes Peak, roll the windows down, blast your playlist, and watch the world drop below as you climb into the clouds. It’s peaceful, powerful, and seriously worth the trip.
End It Right
Not every summer moment has to be wild or expensive. Sometimes, the best memories are late-night drives, sitting around a fire pit, watching stars from a park bench, or laughing until your stomach hurts.
Find your people. Try new things. Say yes to adventures you’ll remember. Because when school starts again, these are the moments you’ll be talking about.
This is your time to make it a summer to actually remember.
