The Spartans have taken to the diamond in 2025 with a brand new hope and all focuses set on a potential league title and a shot at the 2025 CHSAA state baseball playoffs. 2025 has been quite the rollercoaster of the ride for the Spartans, they started off the year with a dominant 17-1 win over intercity rivals Coronado, but than dropped their next two before getting back to .500 with a 16-6 win against Mesa Ridge.
The Spartans than made their annual spring trip to Arizona where they faced some of the top competition from around the country. When they returned they took on Rampart to open their conference schedule with Rampart, who they swept, they than split their 2 game series with Liberty, Fountain-Fort Carson, and Pueblo West, than swept Vista Ridge last week.
The Spartans currently sit at 7-3 in 5A CSML league play and are one of three teams still in contention for the league title. Along side Pueblo West (7-2 in league) and Pine Creek (8-2 in league), The Spartans will head into next week as one of the contenders for the league title that will be decided that very same week.
Doherty will take on Pine Creek on Tuesday and Thursday in a critical series that could determine the title, while Pueblo West finishes their series against Fountain-Fort Carson and then Liberty on Tuesday and Thursday.
The Spartans have been led by an onslaught of young talent as sophomore pitcher and right fielder Derek Graham looks like a true Ace that will dominate for years to come on both sides of the ball, and sophomore Crew Miller has made his mark behind the plate and at the plate. Both of them are hitting over .400, with Miller nearing the .500 mark – which places him inside the top 10 in 5A and 2nd in league – while Graham’s ERA places 7th in league amongst pitchers.
When asked about how he feels his legacy will leave a mark on Doherty baseball, Senior Dominick Morelli – Who headlined Colorado Preps last season for his battle with stage 2 hodgkin’s lymphoma – said, “I hope the impact my story will have on future generations of spartans is that they’ll realize that no matter what they’re going through, that they can get to the other side, and at the same time accomplish their goals in whatever they want to chase”. When asked about what he wishes for his final year at Doherty, he added, “I want to capture a league title and get to regionals, it’s been something I’ve dreamed of since I stepped on a diamond and to do it in my last ride would be something special, I’ve given so much to this game and Im ready to do whatever it costs to leave an everlasting mark on it”.
The Spartans have one last ride this week, they’ll take on Smoky Hill, Pine Creek twice, and Cheyenne Mountain and then wait and hope to hear their name called for the playoffs.
