Doherty High School has welcomed Jenkins Middle School students with open arms after finding out that their school was closing due to major safety concerns and not passing a fire inspection. Jenkins Middle School was unfortunately falling into a creek; massive cracks could be found all over the school’s walls and floors. Their foundation was shifting, primarily in the gym and media center.
Doherty has taken Jenkins students in, knowing how hard it could be for them to have to move to a new building. Doherty provided Jenkins with the entire math hall so that they would have a safe place to learn.
The Colorado Springs District 11 has invested 6.5 million dollars in rebuilding Jenkins Middle School in hopes of reopening the school just in time for the fall semester. In the new renovations, they are using micropiles to support the building’s weight, holding everything into place. Due to being severely damaged, the seventh and eighth grade wings are being demolished and relocated to the south side of the building, since they were not repairable. School officials are saying that they’re ready for students to come back to school. 800 sixth and seventh grade students are enrolling into Jenkins this year, while eighth graders are still attending Doherty while waiting for their new wings. The new renovations have already brought the same number of students that enrolled last year, imagine how many more will be able to enroll when the school is complete!
