Poms celebrate during the 2019 pep rally held outside during September.

On November 12th, 2019, Doherty’s Cheer and Poms squads competed at Vista Ridge High School against teams throughout Colorado Springs. All of the Doherty teams competed with PPAC/CSML league teams in order to get that first place award. Poms performed first at 4:50 P.M. against other schools, and ended up taking home the first place prize. They were both League Champions and Overall Champions for their sport.

The Poms team says, “We are really proud of everyone, and it was an amazing experience because we ended up winning. ”

Junior Varsity and Varsity Cheerleading also had their chance to compete to be champions and each performed individually at 5 and 5:50 P.M. JV’s performance impressed the judges and the team ended up taking home the first place trophy, as well as being named first in the division and first overall. The girls will then compete later in the month for state, which is a competition with teams from all around Colorado. Varsity Cheer then competed after JV’s performance and ended up taking home the second place award. The girls just barely fell to Fountain-Fort-Carson’s team, but are still proud of their routine.

Senior Kaylie O’Flynn states, “I really love these girls and I felt like we did the best we could.”

Freshman Elena Mansfield on Varsity says, “Despite not being as prepared as we would have liked to, I feel like we gave it our all and I really enjoyed my first competition with these girls. I can’t wait for state!”

Both Cheer teams will spend the next few weeks preparing for their next competition, which will take place up in Denver to compete against state-wide teams. The girls plan on being successful in this competition as well, and are excited for the rest of their season.
