Students Janessa Taylor and Joe Dittburner wear their hats freely and openly now that the policy has changed.

There is a new hat policy at Doherty!

Students can wear their hat of choice in hallways and common areas in the school. Teachers are allowed to enforce the no hat policy in their own classrooms if needed.

The new policy is a controversial issue at the school. Before it was enacted staff took a vote to decide if we should continue to enforce the no hat rule at Doherty, and most agreed to get rid of the policy, but there were holdouts.  That is why some teachers can still enforce the policy.

Most students I talked to agree with the new hat policy.

“It’s absolutely phenomenal,” said junior Max Diluzio.

Some say it has not changed what people are wearing. “I don’t think it was bothering anyone to begin with. People were still wearing hats,” said junior Haley Lewis.

However, some have to disagree.

“I don’t agree with it. It’s a lack of respect. Hats are meant for the outside, not the inside. The hats that are worn inside are more of a fashion statement I suppose,” said Counseling Secretary Meganne Warren.

The New Policy has its pros and cons. So far there haven’t been major issues, so let’s hope this is a step to progressively changing the dress code to please both students and staff.
