The longest government shutdown in United States history lasted 43 days stretching from October 1st, 2025 to November 12th, 2025. This event has affected millions of Americans across the nation. Hundreds of thousands of federal employees were either laid off or required to work without pay. Important government operations such as food safety inspections were suspended. Millions of people who received Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits did not receive assistance in the beginning of November. These changes lead to chaotic situations across the nation and severely affect millions of families and households.
During this lengthy and difficult time, schools like Doherty High School came together to support each other and our communities. Doherty participated in an event called Harvest of Love, that helped families and friends who were impacted by the government shutdown. We did this by hosting fun activities, fundraisers and student council went classroom to classroom collecting food and other donations that students brought to participate in Harvest of Love. During lunch time baked goods were sold, and fun activities like Soak-A-Spartan and Spartan Jail were fun ways for everyone to participate and support each other.
Although the government reopened and S.N.A.P benefits were restored, the impact of the government shutdown is still being felt. Countless Doherty students feel proud to be involved.
