The GSTA club at Doherty is here to be an all-inclusive club. The Gay Straight Trans Alliance aims to be a student led organization that allows Doherty to be a safe and welcoming school environment. GSTAs make schools safer for LGBTQ+ students by providing support and educating the school and staff about LGBTQ+ issues and activities. According to the American Civil Liberties Union at aclu.org research has shown that that LGBTQ+ students hear fewer homophobic slurs, experience less harassment, have better attendance, and feel safer at schools that have GSTAs.

The GSTA goes over issues such as pronouns in classrooms, names in yearbooks, and general communication. They meet on Thursdays every month in the auditorium for lunch. As Kylie Burns said, [GSTA is] “A utopia for everyone to be who they are, and to discover others like yourself, no matter what your identity is.” From the outside there are quite a few different views, one of the main ones that I received as quoted from Beaux Taylor, “While it is stupid it has to exist it, is good that it does.”
